hello everyone and welcome to Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences new student welcome night we're putting this presentation together just in case you were not able to be with us a couple days ago so sure to take your screenshots take notes and don't hesitate to reach out to anyone of us after this presentation my name is Maribel Palafox and I am the health counselor my name is tourism in the bee house counselor on the intervention and the college counselor email addresses into the slide so that if you feel the need to reach out to us you have any directions any doubts please please please do not hesitate to reach out to us and we will get back to you as soon as possible however we will have a very interesting and unique experience that we will be able to provide you with next two Saturdays are upcoming so if you want to hold your questions until our drop-in sessions in February February 20th and 27th I believe it is but will give you all the details details moving forward so before we move on we just want to make sure that everybody signs in I know that you're watching a pre-recording but it'll be very very very beneficial for you fine and so that we're able to have your correct contact information you're more than welcome to scan the QR code with your cell phone with an iPad or you're more than welcome to answer to short a URL into the web browser and if we were to be in person at obviously you know we're under different circumstances but normally what we do is that during a new student walk of night we like to walk each and every one of our Jazz with presentations and performances from our dance team and our theater team so we put together performances for you so that you can take advantage of the fee and to introduce you a little bit to miss Peyton with her dance instructor and also misses tiny who is in charge of a Theatre program I just don't want to know I understand and I'm the boss and I would love it if you tried out a dance class with me next year I have I offer five different courses for students of all experience levels if you've never taking a dance class before have no fear I have to beginning dance classes where I cover all of the fundamentals of movement we have a ton of fun together doing Styles as diverse as Dance Fitness social dances ballet hip-hop and more dance with some Dance Experience I offer Jazz technique and three choreography courses that in the year with an incredible student produce show students select their own music costumes lighting and choreograph their own dances sentence with previous training and a passion for performance I encourage you to audition for the boss dance and spirit team now it's time to look at a quick slideshow of what we've been up to for the past few years average of 100 students perform in the spring show each class really bonds as a family these are social justice projects students learn to use their art awareness about issues yoga ballet Hip Hop celebrating our Korean exchange students we danced with celebrating the love of movement getting ready backstage some cultural dances ready to take the busted dancers in rehearsal the dance gym Spirit team an outdoor pep rally Thriller Halloween pep rally Vasa gym Arab teaching to contemporary ballet class and the rain dance did you have a lot of fun at boss I hope you consider taking a class with me I'll see you in the studio next year if you have any questions please email I got Peyton at the Valley Academy. Net thank you very much Miss Peyton and now we are going to move on to a presentation from the theater Department with Misses dining a tiny and I'm the theater arts teacher here at the boss enjoy have been you and now I'm going to leave you with Ms Barbara who going to be going over the course selection process for your students good evening once again I Miss Barbara the intervention and college counselor so the process of selecting your courses every year I've lost we do this in the the February and what we do is a 9th grade course 9th grade planning sheet or 9th grade course selection will use those two names interchangeably and this is specifically for a 9th grader so the 9th graders fill this form out we close at on February 27th at 6 p.m. and here we had advised the kids that are there current leusd school students Place use your Elliott you're my mail LAUSD if you're coming from an outside school or charter school please use your personal email that you use to fill out the information on the demographics the reason we want to know if your enrollment status is a resident or an open enrollment like that are administered it will release the open enrollment form so you could apply on time to be selected once again if you don't have an LAUSD ID number please just to put zeros all the way across your birthday and then we're going to go into classes are mandatory and you have the choice to select your electives so for four years are required to choose an English class so the differences you could start the honors route or in English class English 9A is our standard or take the accelerator program with their owners class that's a mandatory class mathematics is also mandatory in 9th grade if you're currently in common core 8th grade that means he will start with algebra 1 if you're in the honors accelerator program you're going to start with geometry if you're currently taking Algebra 1 some parents might ask my kids did not perform well in Algebra 1 or the grades are not what was expected so you're more than welcome to start with algebra 1 in high school so that's a preference in addition to two requirement classes you will be taking a biology course you will be taking PE and an advisory on that will be automatically give it to you so now we pride ourselves in allowing 9th graders to choose their elective so there's a two different types of electives that we have one that you just select and then we have boss specialty courses that require in a dish applications of you look at our selection here the spirit team dancing them is Peyton was talking about the the theater program stage design and theater company that you just saw Miss tiny recording you also require specialty form if you want to be in yearbook if you want to be in our ASB government if you want to compete in Academic Decathlon or do you want to build your AP portfolio if you would like to go to an art school in the future or you're an artist you could take AP art studio in 9th grade but it requires for you to click on this online application will send you to another Google form just answer the very few questions they just want to get to know what background experience and what you could offer to the program and then the teachers will be selecting so once again you put your your choices so make sure you submit this also 320 27th Ave at 6 do not continuing with our course selection used to like three electives even though in 9th grade some of you guys would do one or two Alexa's based on the program you select so these are all the classes that you may choose as a 9th grader the only one I remember if it says try or a dishing you must do the specialty form but all the other classes are open for you to select so you still like three and the reason we select 3 is if a class is closed or an impacts your class schedule we would like to have other choices to give you what you want and not with we want to give you another awesome thing that we have and losses you could become a boss scholar program which means you will be taking college classes in lieu of your electives 2 and under are dual enrollment program for the benefit of being a lost color is that you're complaining your general horses or working towards your AAA at the same time you're doing your high school diploma and the other courses being offered if you still program so you have a choice yes or no and if you do not start the boss scholar program in 9th grade is perfectly fine you're able to take classes during summer during winter or maybe you want to hold it till 10:30 11th grade once you proceed the second part of the course selection so the second part because I didn't do the required field the second part is going to ask if you're currently working on Spanish or any other foreign language at your current school if you're currently taking Spanish or any other language you would put yes and tell her the language that you're taking something you submit your application if you submit your application you're able to edit that application all the way till February 26th thank you so much Miss Barbara and now we're going to do is that we are go to move forward and let you know a little bit about our advanced classes are advanced placement courses and elective courses in an AP class and an honors class an AP class is a college rigorous course taken at the level of a college-level class but taught by our boss teachers so what happens if you take an AP class it's a weighted class or you'll have cheap a differential so this is how we have our kids that are have gpas anywhere from 4.0 to 4.4 because they they take advantage of the AP classes are offered to our school an honors class is not waited in rle Christy transcript but the college's do give you the differential points so any of our accelerated programs or Voss color will benefit a kid who wants to be competitive when sir applying to college and now miss Torres will be Karin are elective previous and how you could select your electives this Taurus families so the way we did the AP courses and elective courses the school year as we made a menu for you which I will go over how can access the menu and basically you what you do is just Hobart hover over a specific horse that you are interested in or that your student is interested in and they will be able to view a video about that specific course we would like you all know that we do meet at least 25 students applying for that specific class in order to have that class for the next school year and the next size I will go over how you can access this menu go over and look over the classes and as many times as you like and as many courses as you like and these are the potential classes that we will be having they unfortunately do not have a video but these are some of the classes that we potentially will be driving in the next school year if you're going to the Valley Academy. Net website so the valley academy.net and you go under academics and go down to counseling office my hand side you will be able to see the different tabs you can open so there's time for a piano lesson videos to click it and then the same little menu comes up and you would just hover over whatever boxer student or you are interested in for your child and you will go in and view it so if you're interested in repeater you will quickly and a new travel open and the theater class has made a presentation on the theatre if you're interested in the Box Scholars Program the law Scholars students speak about the program so on and so forth and like I said unfortunately we do not have videos for these courses but we will hopefully be offering some of these courses and then here at the bottom we have advanced placement contract so if you like that and comes up with the advanced placement contract which you will be able to look over it and students will need to fill that out if they are going to take an AP course that was Barbara spoke about previously thank you so much. Thank you for that so so as I mentioned in the beginning of our presentation because during our original new student orientation I we did offer opportunities for parents to ask questions being gay for the counselor we want to make sure that we provide the same opportunity for every single one of you so what we're doing is that we have allocated to Saturdays in February to solely dedicated to each and everyone of you so we will be off dropping info sessions and answer your questions or doubts your concerns we do want to encourage you to watch this video first we may have answered your questions throughout the video and if so you are play welcome to join Miss Barbara during her dropping hours which is going to be Saturday February 20th and Saturday February 27th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and you can access the zoom link of YouTube barcode by scanning with your phone or your iPad or you can enter the passcode for the zoom meeting and again we want to make sure they have all your questions answered that all of the students turn in their course selection sheet not just the name lyrics by Tenth Avenue and 12th graders as well and for those students in the higher grade levels 10th 11th and 12th if you show up or when you show up to the drop-in sessions with Miss Barbara she won't be able to provide you with the so that you can select the courses along with answering having your questions answered so we thank you all very much for spending some time with us we try to make it short and concise and again if you have any questions don't forget to drop in Saturday February 20th and 27th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. thank you all very much and getting over by
