Equitable Grading and Math

Equitable Grading is a growth-mindset approach to K-12 teaching and learning, based on the expectation that everyone can learn when provided with the right conditions and support. It offers all students and teachers an alternative to traditional instruction and grading. By refocusing classroom grading, assessment, instruction, and lesson planning on clear learning targets, and by implementing research-based systems honoring individual variation in learning styles, Equitable Grading allows more students to succeed academically and ultimately to take charge of their own learning.
Supporting Your Student
  • Encourage your student to complete assigned practice to prepare themselves for upcoming exams.
  • Utilize our various tutoring services and support materials to receive additional aid on concepts in which they are struggling.
  • Use the support provided on our school website to provide a further review of material.
  • Make an appointment with your teacher or our Math Coach to identify the concepts for which your students need additional support.
  • Review your student's exams with them to see what errors they are making and encourage them to schedule a retake of their low test scores.
  • Remind your student that the goal is for them to improve their learning and to take ownership of their growth.
  • Check your student's grades regularly using Schoology. Please see our Parent Center to gain access if you do not already have this.
  • Have your student dedicate time each day to review their math practices and discuss how you use math in your day-to-day events (both professionally and personally).
How Students Are Graded
Students are graded on their mastery of the learning targets, which are mainly made up of their quiz and test grades. Students are allowed to retest on any test they wish to improve. Retest opportunities are given to students once they have completed some practice and vary from teacher to teacher. Please contact your student's teacher to determine what needs to be completed, as well as to discuss retest opportunities available.
