Good afternoon, VAAS Families, and welcome to the last week of the 2020-21 school year. This is Principal Kelly Hanock with the last weekly update until the Fall Semester.

First, Senior Families, please make sure to pre-register for Thursday’s in-person graduation if your senior plans to participate. Remember, today, June 7 is the last day to be COVID tested for the graduation ceremony.

Also, be aware that the Senior Drive Thru event where students will pick up their caps and gowns and other senior memorabilia will take place tomorrow, Monday, June 7, between 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. in the alley on the south side of the school. Seniors must return their textbooks, iPads, and any other VAAS issued equipment in the Drive Thru before picking up their senior items.

Yearbooks will be distributed this week. Seniors can pick up their VAAS Yearbook in the Drive-Thru on Monday, June 7, between 2:30 and 4:00 p.m. 9th-11th grade students can pick up their VAAS Yearbooks as follows:

  • Tuesday, June 8, between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. or between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (in the drive-thru on Balboa)
  • June 14 – 16, between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. or between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.

(at the student store outside windows)

Next, the 2020-21 VAAS Virtual Dance Show will premiere on Wednesday, June 9, between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Ms. Peyton will be posting the webinar link for this event later this week.

If you are interested in joining our 2021-22 VAAS Virtual Graduation Watch Party on Friday,  June 11, at 10:00 a.m., here is the link for the event:  https://lausd.zoom.us/j/89224265501

And finally, just a reminder that pending any significant changes, VAAS will fully re-open in the Fall on August 16, 2021. We will send you additional information this summer as we get closer to August.

Until then, stay safe, enjoy a relaxing summer, and thank you for all of your support during the last year and a half. Congratulations, Seniors, and best of luck next year.

VAAS Family Update 5.29.21

Good afternoon, VAAS Families, this is Principal Kelly Hanock with the important updates for the week:

First, Senior Families, if your student is planning to participate in one of our in-person graduation ceremonies scheduled for June 10, there is a mandatory parent meeting this Thursday, June 3, at 5:00 p.m. We will be sharing all LA County and District guidelines for these in-person ceremonies, so it is very important that you attend so you know what to expect. Here is the ZOOM link for the Parent Graduation Meeting:

https://lausd.zoom.us/j/87593512115

Also for Senior Families, our VAAS Senior Awards Night will take place this Wednesday, June 2, at 6:00 p.m. Those seniors who are receiving awards will be receiving an invitation from Ms. Barba with the ZOOM Link information.

Next, as you may know, every 11th grade student must be given the opportunity to complete the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments this year in both ELA and Math.   Any student who has not been able to complete the test remotely, will be given an opportunity to take the test in-person on June 3rd from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.    Students should enter campus from the main front gate between 8:30 - 9 a.m.  If they have not already done so, students who plan on coming to campus should RSVP with their advisory teacher as soon as possible.  Following District COVID guidelines, we need to know how many students to expect so we can prepare the space to keep students socially distanced at all times.  Any student coming to campus must also have a current, negative Covid test on file and be able to show a Daily Pass.  Students can get a baseline test at Northridge MS or Reseda HS.  This will be the only in-person opportunity for remote students to complete the test.   If you have any questions, you may reach out to Mrs. Evans, Ms. Blossom, or your child's advisory teacher.

This next piece of information is incredibly important. We would like all families to be aware that LAUSD’s vaccination program is coming to VAAS on Thursday, June 3, between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.. Registration is now open to all LAUSD students ages 12 and up if you would like to make a vaccine appointment. Simply go to http://bit.ly/LAUSD-STUDENT-VACCINE to make an appointment at any LAUSD middle or high school. Again, VAAS’s vaccine clinic is scheduled for June 3rd if you would like to make an appointment at our school. If you have additional questions, please contact Ms. Petrossian at natalie.petrossian@lausd.net or call the Los Angeles Unified Family Vaccination Hotline at (213) 328-3958.

For all students interested in playing Girls’ Volleyball and all those interested in running Cross Country next season we will be hosting informational meetings on Wednesday, June 2nd, at 6:00 p.m. for Girls’ Volleyball and at 6:30 p.m. for Cross Country.

Here is the ZOOM link for these meetings.

Thank you and have a great week.

VAAS Family Update 5.23.21

Good afternoon, VAAS Families, this is Principal Kelly Hanock with this week’s announcements.
With just 3 weeks of school left, I want to make sure to highlight the big events we have coming up for all seniors:

First, Senior Signature Project presentations to our teacher panels will be held this week on Thursday, May 27. The completion of this presentation is a graduation requirement for all seniors to document their service learning. Please check in with your senior if you have one to make sure they are ready to present. The presentation schedule has been shared in all senior advisories and can also be found in Schoology.

Next, our virtual Senior Awards night is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2, at 6:00 p.m. The ZOOM link for this event will be posted on the school’s website, thevalleyacademy.net, as well as shared with all seniors in their Advisory classes next week.

Also, our in-person 2021 Graduation ceremonies are scheduled for Thursday, June 10, at 3:00 p.m. for A-House students and 6:30 p.m. for B-House students. If your graduating senior plans to participate in the in-person graduation event, they must attend the graduation assembly at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 3. There is also a mandatory parent meeting for parents of all seniors who plan to participate in the in-person graduation at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 3. All requirements for participation in graduation will be shared at these two meetings. ZOOM links for all mandatory graduation meetings will be shared next week.

In addition, for all seniors and their families, we will be holding a Virtual Graduation watch party of our virtual graduation on Friday, June 11 at 10:00 a.m. The ZOOM link for this will be available to all senior families free of charge.

And now a message for our Juniors – All 11th graders are required to complete the CAASPP ELA and Math assessments. The final remote make-up test sessions are on June 1 and June 2. The final in-person make-up session is scheduled for June 3rd. If you have questions, please reach out to Ms. Blossom.

For all other students grades 9 -11, just a quick reminder that your Signature Project presentations will take place this week in Advisory, and that your teachers are finalizing 20-week grades now. Make sure to submit all make-up work and anything else you might have so it will count toward your 20-week grade.

And finally, I wanted to share with you a recent announcement made by Superintendent Austin Beutner on a new, comprehensive effort to offer vaccinations to all students 12 and up during this school year while teachers, staff, and our students are still in school. The program is currently scheduled to be available at VAAS on Thursday, June 3, and you will be receiving a letter with more information soon.

Thank you and have a wonderful week.

VAAS Family Update 5.17.21

This is principal Kelly Hanock with important information for you for the coming week.

First, we would like to let everyone know that our school phone system is finally back up and running. I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused and am grateful that we are now able to make and receive calls. If you need to call the school, the best number to call is 818-832-7751

AP exams begin this week with the following schedule:

Tuesday, May 18: AP English Lit.

Wednesday, May 19: AP US History and AP MacroEconomics

Thursday, May 20: AP US Government, AP World History, AP Psychology, and AP Studio Art

Friday, May 21: AP Spanish.

On Tuesday, May 18, please join your student in their virtual Digital Portfolio presentation between the hours of 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. This presentation is a graded assignment in Advisory, so make sure to complete the parent survey after reviewing your student’s Digital Portfolio to document their completion of the assignment.

On Wednesday, May 19, the COVID 19 Mobile Testing Unit will be coming to the VAAS campus.

If you are a Hybrid student or a VAAS student-athlete and need to be tested to keep your Daily Pass current, make sure to submit the hard copy of the parent consent form to Mr. Tyni so you can participate.

On Thursday, May 20, the 20-week report card window opens for teachers. If your student is currently not passing a class or has late work to make-up or submit, it matters that they do so immediately. The district will not be offering extended opportunities for credit at the end of the school year, so it is extremely important that students do everything they can to pass their classes now.

And finally, for those families who have been using a Verizon hotspot issued by LAUSD, please review the  recall information sent to your emails. Over the last several weeks, Verizon was made aware that the lithium-ion battery in the Verizon Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspots can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard, and we want to make sure that this does not happen to you.

As always, we look forward to seeing you in the future and hope you continue to remain safe at home for now. Please let us know if we can provide your student any support and thank you for all you do.
