This is Principal Kelly Hanock, and I hope you are enjoying the three day weekend. Please remember that there is no school tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 26, 2022.
We have many exciting events taking place on our campus this week.

Also on Thursday, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Dr. Castro will be hosting a virtual Parent A-G workshop for all parents to review graduation requirements and to discuss how to support your student’s academic success while preparing for college. The ZOOM link for this important meeting is available on the school website and a flyer about the meeting is attached to the Sunday email.
On Friday, VAAS will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage month with a Spirit Day and lunch time pep rally. We hope all members of our school community will participate by wearing the colors of their favorite Hispanic country, flag, or sports team!
Make-Up Picture day has also been scheduled on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Students who were not available for our first picture day will be summoned to the Theatre to take a photo for their 2022-23 ID card.
We also have our first senior event of the year, Senior Sunset, scheduled to take place on Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m. All seniors except those who are on the Do-Over list may attend free of charge. Please be aware that students who attend must follow all VAAS protocols, including the Food and Drink policy and the VAAS Dress Code.
And finally, I would like to let everyone know that our VAAS tutoring will begin on Monday, Oct. 3, both before school beginning at 7:30 a.m. and after school beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the library. As program enrollment grows, we may add additional tutors and hours as needed. If your student is interested in participating in our Tutoring Program, please have them contact Ms. Pevar in the Counseling Office or sign up using the QR Code available on the VAAS Website. Also available to everyone free of charge is the district’s new online Tutoring Program. Interested students and families can login in at Tutor.com/lausd for 24/7 academic support.
If you have any questions regarding our school or any programs we offer, please feel free to reach out by phone or email, or simply drop by the main office. We appreciate all you do to support your students and our school. Have a great week.
9.18.22 VAAS Family Update
Good afternoon, VAAS Families,
This is Principal Kelly Hanock with this week’s important announcements.
First, I again apologize that this message does not include the normal corresponding email, but we are still waiting to regain full access to the Blackboard Connect Messaging system. A printed version of this message will be available on the school website, thevalleyacademy.net, tomorrow, Monday, Sept. 19.
On Wednesday, Sept. 21, our College Office will be hosting our in-person Senior IGP night beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the VAAS Theatre. Important information about graduation requirements, college applications, and FAFSA will be shared during this presentation, so we hope all 12th grade families will attend.
Also on Wednesday, Sept. 21, our teachers will be submitting their 5-week grades, so make sure your student has turned in all assignments this weekend. Teachers do need to have time to grade assignments and calculate grades, so please do not wait until Wednesday.
On Thursday, Sept. 22, we will be holding a Shelter in Place drill on campus during Period 7. We hope you will take time with your student to reinforce how important it is to take all emergency drills seriously so they know exactly what to do in the event of a real emergency.
On Friday, September 23, our VAAS College Office will be hosting a college representative visit by Grand Canyon University. If this is a school your student is interested in, encourage them to stop by the College Office in Room 112 to sign up to attend.
Senior Sunset, our first senior event of the year, has been rescheduled for Friday, September 30, beginning at 5:00 p.m. All seniors, regardless of grade or attendance eligibility, are invited to attend this fun activity.
And finally, best of luck this week to our Girls’ Volleyball team who will be playing East Valley on Monday and Northridge Academy on Wednesday.
Thank you, everyone, for your contributions to our campus. We hope you all have a wonderful week.
VAAS Family Update 9.11.22
Good afternoon, VAAS Families,
This is Principal Kelly Hanock with this week’s important update.
First, I would like to thank everyone again for their patience during the technology reset this past week. Currently, we have reset almost 100% of student and staff passwords, but you should know that some programs and applications are still not working. The district is working to alleviate this problem, and we will continue to keep you updated. Please be aware that some student devices still do not have functional VPN and so cannot be used off campus, but all teachers will continue to provide alternative ways for students to complete and submit assignments until the VPN issue has been resolved.
Next, our annual Club Rush will take place this week on Tuesday, September 13, during an extended lunch on the quad. All students are invited to visit each club booth and sign up for as many clubs as they like.
We would also like to let everyone know that the 5-week grade window has been extended because of the current technology issues, so 5-week progress reports will be delayed.
On Wednesday, September 4, we will be hosting another school tour at 9:00 a.m. We hope you will share this information with any families you know that are interested in VAAS for the 2023-24 school year.
Our Senior Sunset event scheduled for Friday, Sept. 16, has been postponed. We will provided more details on this soon-to-be-rescheduled event as they become available.
And finally, good luck to our Girls’ Volleyball team this week. They have games on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Go Vipers!
Thanks, everyone, and have a great week.
