There are only 2 school days left until summer break.
This year, in addition to saying goodbye to the graduating Class of 2025, we will also be saying farewell to our amazing leader Principal Kelly Hanock, as she will be retiring this year. As one of the original writers of the school plan and VAAS Mission and Vision Statements, the “personalized, safe environment” that our learning community has experienced the past 14 years, here at VAAS is because of her. Her leadership, kindness and dedication to education will truly be missed. Thank you for everything! Happy Retirement Ms. Hanock and Congratulations Class of 2025. We bid you adieu.

Locker Clearance
Locker clearance will take place on Monday, June 9th. All students will need to have cleared out any books and personal items from their lockers by this Friday, June 6th. Any personal items left in the lockers will be donated or discarded.
June 10th is the last day of instruction. Dismissal will be at 2:20pm.
June 11th is a Pupil Free Day.

This week will begin with a B Day. Tuesday will be our weekly PD day for all faculty and staff. Students will be dismissed at 2:20 p.m.
There are many senior events happening this week. Senior Graduation practice will take place on Thursday and Friday. Seniors must be in their assigned ceremony seats by 8:25 to participate in graduation practice.
The Senior Festival and cap and gown distribution will take place on Thursday, June 5th.
The Class of 2025 Graduation Ceremony will take place on Friday, June 6th at 5:30 p.m. Senior parents, for more details, please refer to the letters and list of dates previously sent home with your senior.
Friday, June 6th will be a minimum day with dismissal for all students at 1:03 p.m. Please note: any seniors expecting to participate in the graduation ceremony must be present on campus from 8:25 a.m. to 1:03 p.m.

iReady End of Year Assessments

Senior Awards
Senior Awards practice is scheduled for Tuesday as well. If your senior received an invitation to Senior Awards night, they will need to attend practice from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the gym with Ms. Torres and Ms. Barba.
The actual Senior Awards ceremony will be held in the VAAS gym on Wednesday night, May 28, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Parents and guests are welcome to attend. Admission is free.
iPad Collection for Seniors and Students Not Returning to VAAS Next Year
On Wednesday, May 28, Senior iPad collection begins. All seniors should make sure to bring their iPads, bricks, charging cords, chromebooks and hotspots to school to return them. Students who do not plan to return to VAAS next year, should plan to return their iPads as well. Fines may be assessed for damaged items and any items not returrned. Students who have questions about their iPads should reach out to Ms. Evans.
VAAS Dance Show
The annual VAAS Dance Show will take place this week. Performances will be on Thursday and Friday, May 29th and May 30th. Tickets can be purchased at the Student Store.
Prom
A Night in the Vineyards Jr/Sr Prom will be held Saturday on May 31st. Please be reminded that students planning to attend prom must be in class and on campus from 8:30 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. on Friday, May 30th. Anyone who arrives late to school or leaves early for any reason will not be allowed to attend Prom. Also students need to have their current school ID card with them. All guests need either their school ID, driver's license, or valid state ID card.

Signature Project Presentations of Learning
This week all VAAS students will be presenting their grade level signature projects in their Advisory classes. To accommodate this event, our schedule will change slightly with period 2 being moved to the end of the day on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This presentation is important because it represents a significant portion of the final Advisory grade for all grade levels, but it is especially significant for seniors. Seniors must complete both the project presentation and the panel defense this week to meet their service learning graduation requirement and to participate in the graduation ceremony. We hope you will help us remind your students how important these presentations are.
Textbook Collection
Textbook collection will begin this coming Monday and continue through next week. If your student has textbooks at home, make sure they bring them into school to return during their English class.
Mandatory Senior Meeting
There will be a Mandatory Senior Meeting held on Wednesday, May 21st during 1st period. All senior students will need to attend this meeting. Important updates will be shared including information about graduation practices, cap and gowns, signature projects, textbooks, school-issued iPads and chromebooks and more!
Lei for Graduation Day
Senior Parents: You can preorder your student’s graduation Lei now for $42 at the student store (cash only). The lei will be hand-delivered on Graduation Day to students as they line up for the ceremony. The last day to preorder is Friday, May 23rd.
Update to the Cafeteria Meal Program
This is a reminder that the cafeteria has started using a new updated system. This updated system will use the barcodes on the student ID card to streamline meal claims and improve the cafeteria experience. Students need to bring their student ID with them to the cafeteria. We greatly appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we implement this new process.
VAAS Yearbook
The VAAS Yearbook is on sale until May 23rd for $95. Make sure to pre-purchase the 2025 yearbook filled with memories of your child’s sports games, robotics competitions, dance performances, dedication in the classroom, and more! Visit www.yearbookforever.com to purchase your yearbook now! Parents of VAAS Seniors, Yearbook will be hosting a signing party held exclusively for those Seniors that have pre-purchased a yearbook on May 30 during advisory. Again, the final day to pre-purchase your yearbook online is May 23rd. Yearbooks can be purchased with cash until June 10 in the student store.

AP Testing
AP Testing will resume this week. Students enrolled in AP Courses will need to bring a fully charged device with them to school. Make sure your student gets a good night’s sleep and plenty of rest.

Update to the Cafeteria Meal Program
We are excited to inform you that the Food Service Department will implement a new process for claiming meals in the student cafeteria. This updated system will use the barcodes on the student ID card to streamline meal claims and improve the cafeteria experience. The new system will enable schools to meet USDA requirements while allowing for a quick transaction at the POS terminal. Students are encouraged to carry their student ID with them at all times, especially when coming to the cafeteria.
All information provided by students will be used solely for the purpose of the school meal services and will not be shared with outside agencies. We greatly appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we implement this new process. We are excited to serve you with this improved system.

Prom tickets go on sale tomorrow, Monday, April 28! Decision Day
Parents of seniors, we are excited to announce that Decision Day is approaching, and we would be honored to have you join us on Friday, May 2nd at 9:30 am to celebrate our Class of 2025. Our annual "Decision Day" parade is where we will honor our students' post-secondary commitments. Your presence would mean the world to their classmates as they embark on their next chapter of life. This event is powerful for the 9 - 11th graders because it motivates them to think of their post-secondary choices as we continue to build on our College and Career knowledge across our campus.
VAAS Music and Arts Festival - The Annual VAAS Music and Art Festival will be held on Friday, May 2nd from 4:30 - 8:00pm. The night will include 3 student bands, 2 teacher bands, and a student DJ. Plus 4 food trucks: Handels Ice Cream, Sonora Street Style, OneHotMinute LA and FryDay Eats.

This week is WIN week at VAAS. This is a week for those who have been struggling in their classes to make up or resubmit work as well as to meet 1:1 with each of their teachers. Say Something Program
This week at VAAS, the students will be learning about the Say Something program, which teaches students to recognize the warning signs of someone at-risk of hurting themselves or others and how to “say something” to a Trusted Adult to get help. As parents and caregivers, you are the Trusted Adults our students look to. While you may not be able to help with everything, you can listen, show compassion, and provide validation. We encourage you to ask your child to tell you what they learned about how to Say Something when they have a concern

Updated PTSA Board Member Elections for 2025-26
There has been a change to the PTSA Board Member elections date. Nominations and elections will be held IN PERSON at VAAS on Tuesday, April 1st at 6:30 pm. All VAAS PTSA Board positions are open. If you are interested in running for a PTSA board position, please send an email with your name and the position you are interested in to [email protected]. Nominations will also be taken on the day of the elections. All nominees must be a current PTSA member.
Senior Class Meeting
The first of two senior class meetings for graduation will be held on Wednesday, April 2. Seniors will receive important information regarding the rest of the senior year, including graduation. Please make sure to check with your student to see this information. Some of it will require a parent/caregiver signature.
New Student Welcome Night
Our virtual New Student Welcome Night will be held Thursday, April 3, from 5-7pm.
VAAS Spring Dance - Spring Fling, Mama Mia is this Friday April 4th. There will be food, drinks, a complimentary photo booth, and of course lots of dancing. This island themed get-away event is sure to be super fun. Students must bring their actual, current student ID card to enter the dance. No bags of any size allowed. We would like to invite parents and caretakers to our upcoming workshops called Resilient Families. In these workshops, we will be discussing stress management and emotional well-being. Using a strength-based approach, we will share information on how to increase connectedness, lower stress, & promote well-being for families. School Day SAT Exam - Special Bell Schedule
This is an important reminder about SAT School Day. On Wednesday March 19th, all 11th-grade students will take the SAT unless they opt out by 3:30 pm on Monday, March 17th. If you wish to opt out your student, please complete the form at bit.ly/SAToptout2025.
Students must bring a fully charged school-issued device and report to their assigned testing location on Wednesday morning for testing. If students are unsure what room to go to, there will be signs posted on the first and second floor doors. To ensure they perform their best, we recommend they get a good night’s sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast, as lunch will be moved to 11:40 AM on test day. Also, please remind students that cell phones, earbuds, hoodies, and hats are not allowed to be used or worn in the testing room.
Open House
Open House is Thursday, March 20th from 5 - 7 p.m. We look forward to seeing you there!
Valley Game Day Cheerleading Competition
The Valley Game Day Tournament will be held at VAAS on Friday, March 21st from 4 - 6 pm. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
School Experience Survey (SES)
The deadline for parents to complete the School Experience Survey is Friday, April 11, 2025. We strongly encourage parents to take the survey online by going to https://www.lausd.org/TakeTheSES and clicking the “Parent Survey” button near the bottom of the page. As part of the school community, your opinions are important and we would like to hear from you. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Your ticket includes pizza, salad, drinks, desert a complimentary photo booth and of course lots of dancing. This is an Island Themed Get-Away event sure to be super fun. The Annual VAAS Music and Arts Festival will be held on Friday, May 2nd. This year the popular shirts are PRE-SALE only and can be purchased at the student store for $15 each now through Friday, March 28.
Update About PTSA Board Nominations & Election for 2025-26
All VAAS PTSA board positions are open. If you are interested in running for a PTSA board position, please send an email with your name and the position you are interested in to [email protected]. Nominations will also be taken on the day of the elections which will take place IN PERSON at VAAS. More details coming soon *Nominees must be a PTSA member.
Drop in with Admin
Just a reminder Drop in with Admin sessions happen once a month via Zoom. After the presentation parents have the opportunity to speak with VAAS Admin and ask questions. Daylight Savings Time
Daylight Savings time began today, signaling the coming of Spring. We lost one hour of sleep. Check your clocks and make sure they have changed.
Safety Message
March is a great time to reflect, reset, and keep striving for traffic safety success. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with crosswalks and stop signs in your neighborhood and on your route to school. Students, when walking to school, stay on sidewalks and when driving stop ahead of the stop sign limit lines! Additionally, remember the crosswalks on San Jose and on Devonshire both have heavy pedestrian traffic. Be extra vigilant when using and approaching these intersections. Let’s stay safe and alert as we progress through the rest of this semester!
Fantastic News
Our VAAS Robotics team has been invited to participate as a Premier Event at the FIRST Tech Challenge Championship in Houston, Texas! This achievement, which reflects the teams dedication, problem-solving skills, and commitment to STEM excellence. Way to go VAAS Robotics!
Seniors
Seniors! It is time to order graduation gowns. Last week a link was sent to parents/guardians of all 12th graders This link is requesting information for your child’s 2025 graduation ceremony gown. This information was due by March 7th. We will be reaching out to any parents who have not yet submitted the information. Thank you.
VAAS Spring Dance
Spring Fling, Mama Mia! Dance tickets go on sale tomorrow, Monday, March 10th! The pre-sale price is $10 from March 10 - March 21. Then increase to $12 on March 24. The dance is Friday April 4th. Your ticket includes pizza, salad, drinks, desert a complimentary photo booth and of course lots of dancing. This is an Island Themed Get-Away event sure to be super fun
School Day SAT Exam
We will be administering the School Day SAT on Wednesday March 19, 2025 for all 11th grade students. During this time we will be having a special bell schedule. If you do not wish for your 11th grader to participate in this test, please complete the bit.ly opt out form: bit.ly/SAToptout2025. School Experience Survey (SES)
The district’s School Experience Survey began on Monday, February 10, 2025. The deadline for parents to complete the survey is Friday, April 11, 2025. We strongly encourage parents to take the survey online by going to https://www.lausd.org/TakeTheSES and clicking the “Parent Survey” button near the bottom of the page. The parent survey is available in different languages and can be completed on any digital device, including the computers provided by Los Angeles Unified. If you are not able to take the survey online, a limited number of paper surveys are available at our school. Please contact us for details. As part of the school community, your opinions are important and we would like to hear from you. Thank you for your cooperation and support.
Parent Center Workshops
We would like to invite parents and caretakers to our upcoming workshops called Resilient Families. In these workshops, we will be discussing stress management and emotional well-being. Using a strength-based approach, we will share information on how to increase connectedness, lower stress, & promote well-being for families. The workshops start this Thursday, March 13th from 9:00-10:30am. We hope to see you there!

Saturday School
We are inviting students to attend "Just-in-Time" Tutoring Support once a month on Saturday. These sessions will provide students with opportunities to access grade-level resources to increase their knowledge and skills and prevent low grades. The remaining Saturday Dates are 04/05, 04/26, & 05/17.
