VAAS Family Update 5.9.21
Good afternoon, VAAS Families, and Happy Mother’s Day.
I am very happy to share with our seniors and their families that we have been given permission to move forward with our plan for a limited, in-person graduation this year.
We will be sharing the details of this plan during our “Drop-In-With-The Administrators” session tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. All VAAS seniors and their families are invited to attend this informational meeting.
Seniors and their families who are not able to attend tomorrow’s meeting should save the following dates:
- Thursday, June 3rd, at 12:30 p.m.: Mandatory Senior Graduation Assembly for those seniors who plan to participate in the in-person graduation
- Thursday, June 3rd, at 5:00p.m.: Mandatory Parent/Guardian Webinar for those who plan to attend the in-person graduation
- Monday, June 7, from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. – Senior Drive-thru event to pick up caps & gowns, senior awards, yard signs, etc.
- Thursday, June 10, at 3:00 p.m. – A-House Graduation
- Thursday, June 10, at 6:30 p.m. – B-House Graduation
Because the district and county have set very specific guidelines for in-person graduations this year, it is very important that everyone who plans to participate attend these meetings. You should also know that we are in the process of creating a virtual graduation as well. This virtual graduation will be made available to all families free of charge on Friday, June 11, during a virtual watch party for our school community.
Next, we would like to remind you that make-up CAASPP testing will be taking place this week. This is especially important for 11th grade students who need the EAP this year. If you have questions regarding this year’s testing plan, please email Ms. Evans at Malaika.Evans@thevalleyacademy.net .
And finally, I would like to congratulate our Boys’ Baseball team for their success on the field so far this year, and I would also like to wish good luck to our Cheer team in their virtual competitions.
Thank you and have a great week.
VAAS Family Update 4.18.21
Good afternoon, VAAS Families. This is Principal Kelly Hanock with the important updates for this week.
First, we invite all families who have elected the Hybrid Option for the re-opening of LAUSD schools to join us either tomorrow morning, April 19, at 8:30 a.m. or tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. for the special orientation for Hybrid students returning to campus next week. We will be discussing safety protocols, bell schedules, and behavioral expectations, as well as answering any questions you might have. The ZOOM link for the Hybrid Orientation is available on our school website, thevalleyacademy.net.
Hybrid students will also participate in a mandatory Advisory meeting orientation on Tuesday, April 20, during periods H/L. Advisory teachers will be providing the link to all Hybrid students on Tuesday morning.
All Hybrid students are also required to schedule and take a COVID 19 test within one week of their return date. 9th graders will be returning on Tuesday, April 27 (H period Advisory students) and Wednesday, April 28 (L period Advisory students). 10th – 12th grade students will be returning on Thursday, April 29 (H period Advisory students) and Friday, April 30 (L period Advisory students.) If you need to make a COVID 19 test appointment, please do so using the LAUSD Daily Pass. The Daily Pass can be accessed by LAUSD students at dailypass.lausd.net
Next, on April 14th, the California Department of Education released a decision regarding state testing. For Grade 11, schools will continue to administer the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics so that students will have every opportunity to qualify for the Early Assessment Program for participating community colleges and California State Universities. For this reason, 11th graders will resume SBAC testing this week on April 20th and will continue until every eligible grade 11 student has been given the opportunity to complete the assessments in both content areas. For more information, please check out the “CAASPP Info for Parents” link on our website homepage.
Students, tomorrow, Monday, April 19, is the deadline for all Upcycle Art Contest submissions. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Skinner at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Seniors, we are still waiting to hear from the district about what in-person senior activities might be allowed this year now that LA County is beginning to open up. As soon as we know anything at all, we will let you know and will start planning!
And finally, College Lab hours will begin on Thursday, April 22, at 3:30 p.m. Please contact Ms. Barba to take advantage of this opportunity if you are looking for support in your transition to college next year.
Thank you, stay safe, and have a good week.
VAAS Family Update 4.11.21
Good afternoon, VAAS Families. This is Principal Kelly Hanock with some important updates for the week.
First, we would like to make sure that everyone knows the LAUSD Grab N Go sites have now started to close. Banners should be posted at each site providing information about alternative food distribution sites that will remain available to those who need it. Once schools re-open, Hybrid students will receive meals to take home, and online students will be able to pick food up at the school M-F. We will provide more details on this as they are shared by the district.
Next, during tomorrow’s “Drop In with the Administrators” session, we will be reviewing the new schedule that will be implemented beginning April 26, when schools re-open. Additionally, on Monday, April 19, we will be hosting two Virtual Hybrid Orientation sessions for parents and guardians of Hybrid students opting to return to campus. Parents can choose to attend the 8:30 a.m. meeting or the 5:30 p.m. meeting. ZOOM log in information will be provided next week.
Students who are returning to campus in the Hybrid system must schedule and take a baseline COVID test between April 19th and April 26th, even if you have been tested previously. Students who do not schedule and take a COVID test between April 19th and 26th will not be allowed on campus. LAUSD COVID Testing sites will now be open seven days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You can make an appointment using the Daily Pass system. If you have not yet set up your Daily Pass, please go to dailypass.lausd.net to do so.
And finally, we would like to let everyone know that the 15-week grade window opens this Thursday, April 15. Students should make sure all classwork, homework, and make-up has been completed and submitted as teachers will be finalizing 15-week grades soon. At this time, the district does not plan to provide an extended opportunity to improve grades at the close of the semester, so make sure to focus on your grades now.
Thank you and have a great week.
VAAS Family Update 4.5.21
Good morning, VAAS families,
This is principal Kelly Hanock with this week’s important announcements.
First, in honor of National Assistant Principals’ Week, I hope you will join me in thanking Ms. Evans, Ms. Petrossian, and Mr. Tyni for all of the hard work they do to make VAAS such a great school.
Next, just a reminder that online Distance Learning classes for all students resume tomorrow, April 5, at 9:00 a.m.
On campus learning through the Hybrid option for those students who have elected that option on the Return-to-School survey will begin on April 26. If your student has chosen to return to campus on April 26, please make sure to schedule a baseline COVID 19 test at achieve.lausd.net at least one week prior to the return date. Students who are returning to campus must also download the Daily Pass App at dailypass.lausd.net.
And finally, remember this is Spirit Week, and tomorrow is Comedic Illustration Day. Check with Leadership students or Ms. Guerra for more information on this.
We do hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Spring Break. Take good care, and we will see you on ZOOM tomorrow.
VAAS Family Update 3.22.21
Good afternoon, VAAS Families, this is principal Kelly Hanock with the updates for the week of March 22.
First, we would like to remind all students and families that WIN Week starts tomorrow. For any students who need time to make-up work or improve their grades will have time in every class this week to conference with their teachers and submit make-up assignments. All teachers in all classes will be providing this opportunity to their students, so please make sure your student is in class to take advantage of it. If your student is caught up and has no need to improve their grades, a series of engaging enrichment opportunities including speakers, college support sessions, and virtual field trips will be available for them. You can check Schoology for the daily enrichment presentations.
Next, 11th graders, if you have an old iPad Air and you experienced major technical difficulties with your iPad during testing, you will have a chance to swap your iPads on Monday, March 22nd from 7:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and on Tuesday, March 23 from 2:30 -5 p.m. Parents, if you have not already done so this year, please go to device.lausd.net and fill out the Responsible Use Policy and Parent Acknowledgement Forms. The access code for this form is lausd2020. Please save your confirmation number as you may be asked for it when you come to the drive-thru. 11th grade students will need to bring their old devices and chargers, their student ID’s and a mask or face-covering. Please email Ms. Evans if you have any questions.
On Tuesday, March 23, our PTSA will be hosting their next Association meeting at 6:30 p.m.
The ZOOM link is 474 463 6875, and the password is VAASPTSA.
In honor of Women’s Empowerment, please encourage your student to sport their best Rosie-the-Riveter fashion tomorrow, Monday, March 22.
And finally, this week is a four day school week. Friday, March 26, is a holiday in honor of Cesar Chavez, and the week of March 28 through April 3 is Spring Break. The next Family Update will be scheduled for April 4, and virtual learning will resume on April 5.
