Spring 2022 Updates from Principal Hanock

 VAAS Family Update 6.6.22

Welcome to the final week of the 2021-22 school year.

Please be aware that this week’s schedule is slightly different as we have minimum days scheduled on Wednesday, June 8, for graduation, and on Friday, June 10, for the last day of school. School will end at 1:00 p.m. on both of these two days. The rest of the week we will follow a regular day schedule.

Cap and gowns will be distributed to all seniors on Tuesday, June 7, after the Senior Festival at approximately 2:00 p.m. We will make a PA announcement on Tuesday when it is time for seniors to come to distribution in the lunch area.

Yearbook distribution has been slightly delayed due to a late shipment by the yearbook company, but we are anticipating that yearbooks will arrive some time tomorrow and then be distributed on Tuesday, June 7. We will provide more information to everyone once the books do arrive, so again, students should pay close attention to PA announcements this week.

We will have COVID testing on Wednesday, June 8. Everyone on campus, except those who are in the middle of their 90-day positive window, should plan to test.

All students will need to clear their lockers by Wednesday, June 8, as locker clearance will take place on Thursday, June 9, first thing in the morning. Any items left in student lockers will be removed and discarded, so all students need to make sure their lockers are cleared by the close of school on Wednesday.

Also, on Wednesday, June 8, we will be holding our Class of 2022 Graduation Ceremony. We will be clearing the campus at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday in order to set up for graduation, so all students will need to leave campus immediately after school at 1:00 p.m.

The gates for graduation will open at 4:30 p.m. Remember, A-House seniors will need to enter the school through the main gate on Balboa, and B-House seniors will need to enter through the alley gate next to the music room unless alternative arrangements have been made with Ms. Evans due to individual circumstances. Remember, parents, we cannot allow noisemakers, heeled shoes, balloons, or outside food or drink into the ceremony, and actual diplomas will need to be picked up in the gym after the ceremony.

On behalf of the entire VAAS faculty and staff, I would like to thank all of you for your support during this difficult year. VAAS is the school it is because of our incredible students and their families. We hope you enjoy a wonderful, safe summer, and we will see those of you who are returning to VAAS when school resumes on Monday, August 15th. Thank you.

VAAS Family Update 5.30.22

This is Principal Kelly Hanock with our second to last update of the 2022-23 school year.

This first message is for all students, but especially for seniors. This week we will be collecting textbooks, athletic uniforms, and delinquent fines from all students as well as iPads from all seniors. Seniors who do not return their iPads, textbooks, or uniforms and who remain on the Delinquent List will not be allowed to participate in graduation. All textbooks will be collected through English classes, and athletic uniforms should be returned to Ms. Guerra in room 311. Delinquent fines can be paid at the Student Store.

Senior iPad collection specifically will take place on Tuesday, May 31, during period 1. Seniors must bring their iPads, bricks, and charging cords to school on Tuesday in order to return them. Please remember to bring all three items, even if they are damaged, to school on Tuesday; iPads should be charged. Students in grades 9-11 will be allowed to keep their iPads over the summer.

Senior Awards Night is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1, at 6:00 p.m. All seniors who are receiving awards have been notified and provided an invitation with two tickets per family. Remember, only seniors who have been invited, and those with whom they have shared their two tickets will be allowed to attend Senior Awards Night. Seniors will be required to show a current Daily Pass to enter, and guests must show their tickets as well as a COVID Vaccination card or a negative COVID test dated within the last 72 hours. Senior Awards practice will take place on Tuesday, May 31, immediately after school in the gym, and all participating seniors must attend this practice.

It is incredibly important for all students, but again, especially seniors, to be COVID tested this week (unless they are within a 90-day COVID positive testing window). Any students who do not test and who end up on the Daily Pass Disallowed list will NOT be allowed to participate in any of next week’s senior events, including graduation. With the recent increase in COVID numbers, we are also recommending that everyone begin wearing COVID face masks again while on campus. We do not want to exclude anyone from graduation, but if seniors test positive, they will not be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony. Please be as safe as possible.

Also this week, Yearbook will be holding a senior only distribution and signing event on Friday, June 3rd, during Period 8 in the quad. All seniors who have purchased 2021-22 yearbooks are invited to participate in this event. Students may still buy yearbooks at until June 2nd. Hurry, before yearbooks run out!

This week VAAS will also be celebrating PRIDE Spirit Week. Students should listen to the morning PA announcements for specific information. On Tuesday, our Leadership class is hoping everyone will wear either red or orange.

And finally, on behalf of the VAAS Administrative team and entire VAAS faculty, we would like to thank all families for their support of our school this year, especially with the uncertainty throughout the year caused by the changing pandemic requirements. You have all been great, and we appreciate all you do.

VAAS Family Update 5.23.22

On Monday, May 23, at 5:30 p.m., there will be a mandatory virtual parent meeting for seniors and their parents who are planning to attend our 2022 graduation ceremony. At this time, we are still planning for an in-person ceremony, so it is important for everyone to know what to expect with COVID safety guidelines and other expectations. The link for the meeting is: and will last approximately 30 minutes.

Also throughout the week, all students will be presenting their grade level signature projects to their peers and teachers during Advisory, and seniors will be presenting their Project Defenses to teacher panels on Thursday. For this reason, Thursday, May 26, will be a minimum day with students in grades 9 – 11 being released at 1:00 p.m. If you haven’t yet seen your student’s Signature Project, make sure to ask them about it.

On Wednesday, May 25, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., our Music Dept. will be presenting their Spring Music Production. This outdoor event will be free of charge, so we hope you will plan to attend.

All senior grades will be submitted on Friday, May 27, in preparation for graduation. Any seniors who have missing assignments should make sure to check with their teachers ASAP about final deadlines.

And finally, I would like to ask all of you to have conversations with your students about making good choices during the final few weeks of school. As the weather warms and summer gets closer, there can be plenty of temptations. We want to make sure all students stay safe and complete the year successfully. Thank you and have a great week.

VAAS Family Update 5.16.22

We have just a few brief reminders for you as we head into the end of the school year.

First, senior parents, please remind your students that  there will be a meeting tomorrow, Monday, May 17, during first period for seniors who purchased tickets to Grad Nite. This is a mandatory meeting, so seniors must make sure to attend. There will also be a meeting at lunch tomorrow for any seniors interested in being a member of the 2022 Prom Court.

On Tuesday, May 17, beginning at 5:00 p.m., VAAS will be hosting both Girls’ and Boys’ basketball alumni games. Please come join the fun free of charge in our VAAS Gym.

On Wednesday, May 18, VAAS will be celebrating VAAS Decision day to recognize post-graduate plans and decisions for all of our seniors. For more information on this event, please contact one of our College Counselors, either Ms. Barba or Mr. Marshall.

Also on Wednesday, the Mobile COVID testing unit will be on campus. If your student is not within a positive COVID testing window, please remind them that they must be tested each week in order to download a current Daily Pass.

If you have younger siblings who are planning to attend VAAS next year or if you know of new families who have been accepted to VAAS, we will be hosting a virtual meeting on Wednesday night beginning at 5:30 p.m. During this meeting, students will be selecting courses for the 2022-23 school year, so attendance at this meeting is very important.

If you know of families who are still interested in applying to VAAS, please share with them that we will be hosting school tours on Tuesday, May 17, at 8:30 a.m. and on Thursday, May 19, at 4:00 p.m. More information is available on our website if you or someone you know is interested in signing up for a VAAS School Tour.

On Friday, May 20, we will be holding our final senior meeting of the school year. Please remind your seniors that this is a mandatory meeting for anyone planning to participate in graduation.

Also, because Prom is scheduled for Friday, May 20, beginning at 6:30 p.m., it is imperative that everyone understand that students must be in school all day, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. if you plan to attend. As per district policy, if you arrive late to school, leave early from school, or are absent altogether on Friday, May 20, you WILL NOT be allowed to attend prom, even if you have already purchased a ticket.

To those of you who have students enrolled in Spring Plus classes, please remind your students that there are only a few class sessions remaining, and students must complete all course work in order to receive credit. If you have questions regarding Spring Plus, please contact Ms. Hernandez in our Counseling Dept.

And finally, congratulations to our Girls’ Softball team who won their second play-off game last Friday. The team takes on Triumph High School in Sylmar tomorrow, Monday, May 16. Good luck, Vipers!

Have a wonderful week.

VAAS Family Update 5.9.22

2.On Tuesday, May 10, we will be hosting our next Drop In with the VAAS Administrators session. Our topic this week will be the 2022 graduation. If you have a graduating senior, please plan to attend this virtual meeting as we will be going over our plans for the 2022 graduation ceremony and answering any questions you may have about end-of-year senior events. Here is the link for the meeting:

3.The Mobile COVID Testing Unit will be on campus again this week on Wednesday, May 11. Remind your students that unless they are within a 90-day COVID positive window, they must get a COVID test to be eligible for a Daily Pass. Those who cannot download a current Daily Pass each day cannot be allowed on campus.

4. For all students, Yearbook is celebrating Yearbook Sales Week and is launching its last sale of the year from May 9th through May 13th. Buy your yearbook from using the coupon code “YEARBOOK" (all caps) for only $75. The deadline to buy a yearbook is May 20th, and yearbooks sell out every year. Do not wait to buy yours.

5. VAAS will be hosting the LAPD Crash Car presentation this week on Thursday, May 12. This presentation is a serious reminder to all students, but especially to our seniors and juniors who will be attending prom, not to drink and drive. We hope you will support us in echoing this message to your students at home.

And finally, we would like to wish the best of luck to our Girls’ Softball team in their playoff game this week on Tuesday, May 10.

Have a great week, and thank you for your ongoing support.
