About Me:

Hello! My name is Alex Schultz and I am one of the art teachers at the Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences. I joined the VAAS team in 2021, but I began my career as an art teacher in 1994. I have taught art classes to Pre-K through adult students, and I love to teach a large variety of media including pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, watercolor, acrylic, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, architectural design, product design, digital design, and 3D printing.

I was born in Boulder, Colorado and raised near Denver, Colorado. I first moved to Los Angeles in 2001 and taught in the Visual Arts and Design Academy at Pasadena High School until 2015 when I moved back to Denver. I was in Denver for six years and absolutely missed living in Southern California, so I moved back to Los Angeles in 2021.

I attended college at the University of Colorado in Boulder where I earned my BFA in Fine Arts Education and also a BA in Environmental, Population, and Organismic Biology. I later went on to earn my MaED in Administration and Supervision. I have always loved both art and science and enjoy exploring the similarities and differences between the two.

It was one of my own high school art teachers, Ms. Samantha Short, who inspired me to pursue an art degree in college and to become an art teacher. I was even able to complete part of my student teaching experience under her supervision. I absolutely love being an art teacher and I find it very inspiring to work with my students. It is a personal goal of mine to be an art teacher for 50 years or more!

In my down time I enjoy reading, painting, surf fishing, paddle boarding, hiking, taking my dogs out, and spending time with my family and friends.
