Dr. Penelope Jo (Penny) Black was the first School Counselor hired before VAAS opened in 2011. She is delighted that the VAAS Counseling Department has developed an outstanding program based upon the National Model of the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) and the State Standards of the California Association of School Counselors (CASC). With the addition of academic counselor, Ella Brauer, Intervention/College Counselor, Letty Barba, and A-G Intervention Counselor,Iliana Hernandez, VAAS is ready to assist every student with all academic, personal, and college-career planning.
Before arriving in LAUSD in 2000, Dr. Black taught math grades 7-12 at the International School in Kuwait and was a math teacher/ Guidance Clinic Coordinator at the American School in Japan. Then, as a northern California single parent eager to move her children out of an under-performing school district, she taught in independent schools, She believes that her greatest professional development experience was being a single parent to Jessica (now a Boston College Assistant Professor) and Andrew (now at Google).
