Mr. Kwon's Biography!

Welcome to VAAS! I am honored to teach a bunch of young motivated future mathematicians and engineers.  Even if they are not, they will learn to love math.  My belief is that anyone curious about math can be taught how to do anything in math.  The old school philosophy of hard work and perseverance that makes a man or woman great is what drives me.  I learned a lot about math through playing and watching sports.  Math is  a lot like playing a sport in the sense that if you don't practice correctly, you will never get good at it.  Practicing the skills in math correctly makes a good mathematician just like an athlete who practices his/her craft correctly makes them a better athlete.
I have been teaching math for the last 13 years.  I am the AP Calculus AB and BC teacher here and we have a lot of fun in this class. Students not only learn everything they need to know for Calculus but they learn to remain curious and further pursue their passion for math.  They learn the skills in math to solve real world problems. Some have been inspired to become future engineers and mathematicians.  Especially our young ladies since women are under-represented in engineering and math.  We celebrate together with banquets and laugh and even cry together. Either from disappointment or extreme joy.  I also am honored to be the Pre-Calculus and Algebra 2 teacher in this school.  These young men and women in these classes are also inspired to further pursue their goals in math. My classes have been compared to being in a family environment.  All feel welcomed and students are encouraged to question and challenge the things taught in class.
I am always available to help my students and my after tutoring schedule is posted on my door.  This year my AP Calculus Club is on Monday's after school from 3:15 - 4:15 pm.  The club is open for anyone preparing for the AP Calculus exam.  Also we elaborate and extend the things we learn in class during this time.  Wednesday's are tutoring for Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus classes.  We start at 3:00 and go as long as they need me. We usually even go to close to 5:00 pm.  Thursday's are for AP Calculus homework help and tutoring.  This is where I help my students with their homework in AP Calculus and tutor students who need my help for Calculus.  We start at 3:15 and go to usually close to 5:00 pm.  Friday's are tutoring for all subjects whether they are in my class or not.  But Friday's are by appointment only.  And it goes from 3:15 to 4:15.
I am also the Key Club Advisor and we have one of the most active Key clubs in the State.  Our students learn to love service and learn to make a difference in their community and school and even their state.  If you are considering VAAS, then you will not regret it.  It is a family environment where all faculty and staff treat your children like family.  I look forward to meeting all of you.  And one last thing for all my USC family and friends.  Fight ON!!!!
