Greetings! My name is Astrid Carrillo and I currently teach English Language Arts for 10th and 11th graders and also manage our Leadership class. I graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a BA in Psychology. Following graduation I moved to New York City and dedicate a year of service through AmeriCorps' VISTA program. I worked in fundraising and programming for a local non-profit that provided high school students with an opportunity to participate in debate competitions at the state and national level. It was when I decided to pursue teaching that I returned to California and received my credential from California State University Northridge.
I truly enjoy working with my students to help further their skills in reading, writing and comprehension, and supporting their individual growth within the VAAS community. My goal is for them to feel prepared to have a successful future. I also consider myself a lifelong learner and am constantly challenging myself to grow as an educator. Most recently, I participated in an educational exchange program in Berlin, Germany where I studied alongside seven other Los Angeles educators.
