About Me

Greetings everyone! I teach Academic Literature to incoming ninth graders, Humanities (Film) and am also the yearbook advisor. This is my second year teaching at the Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences, and I'm thrilled to be part of this ‘VAASome’ community. Before joining VAAS, I was student teaching 10th Grade English Honors at Golden Valley High School and prior to that teaching 6th Grade English at Ernest Lawrence Middle School. I graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in English and Gender Studies and went onto pursue my credential in Secondary English from California State University, Northridge. My areas of interest are literature, poetry, art, and education. I have always been passionate about education and view it as an empowering tool to foster social justice and equity. I absolutely love working with my students to help them grow as critical thinkers and lifelong learners. I believe that learning never ends and see my role in the classroom as a learning facilitator who grows with her class. When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy reading, hiking, cooking, watching old TV shows and above all spending time with my family. If you happen to have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at erum.asif@thevalleyacademy.net.
